There isn’t much in this world that is perfect, and creating art is no different. Whether it is a painting, a short story, or a poem, the creative process is a rare opportunity to express your truth. People want to both create and consume work that they can relate to – and imperfection is much more relatable than perfection.
Why Expression Matters More Than Perfection
The messier, the better
Art is rarely inspired by ‘perfect’ situations or experiences.
In fact, the best art is often inspired by experiences that we have found challenging, or parts of ourselves that we are trying to understand - the messy, imperfect parts of ourselves that we want to make sense of.
There is a definite appeal to people who are confident enough to let their imperfections show, whether through their work, or even personal style. Think in fashion – people often like more imperfect, worn in clothes than new ones. Whether you’ve torn a hole in the heel of your jeans or caused the graphic on your t-shirt to wear and crack, these imperfections add character and make your wardrobe favourites uniquely yours.
Perfection is impossible
In truth, many would argue that there is no such thing as perfection and, with art being subjective, everyone will likely have a different idea of what perfection means to them. Therefore, the pursuit of perfection is an impossible task – and will only turn you away from sharing your art.
Don’t let the pursuit of perfection stop you from sharing your work with the world.
In the creative process, far too much importance is placed on the end result. Creativity is an intimate journey of self-expression, and the process often matters more than the product. Whatever your preferred means of expression, try to place less value on what you make, and more value on the intent that makes it possible. Expression is a vulnerable thing, so you should be proud of yourself regardless of how well it all turns out.
People admire authenticity
With performativity at an all-time high for us Gen-Zer’s, authenticity can be hard to come by – but that makes it even more respected. Whether it is through the art you make or the way you dress, your creativity leaves a lasting impression on others.
If you try and disguise your imperfections, you run the risk of people seeing through the mask.
Often, the pieces of your work that leave the most important impression are the ones that you can’t quite explain. When you let yourself be expressive, you will create art that is the truest to who you are.

So, worry less about perfection – it is overrated anyway. And embrace the journey of self-expression. You’ll thank yourself for it.
