In the social media age, trends are all the rage - and fashion is no different. From the hype beast era of the late 2010’s to the comeback of Y2K, what is ‘in’ is constantly changing. The truth is that, although trend hopping can feel like the best way to keep your wardrobe relevant, it can stop you from finding your individual style – the only aspect of fashion that is truly timeless.
When Fashion Stops Being Trend and Starts Being Uniquely Yours
Dress a little bit cooler than you think you are
We can be quick to find reasons that don’t let us dress how we want to dress – maybe it’s a lack of money, or doubting our own fashion opinions. Truth be told, the biggest obstacle to improving our fashion choices is often our own lack of confidence. Everyone has their own taste – but you might see a piece of clothing in a shop and think about how cool that would look on the right person.
That little voice in your head, telling you that you couldn’t pull it off, is exactly what is holding you back.
Finding your own style often comes from giving yourself the permission to experiment and explore – when you remove self-doubt, you will likely start to find yourself moving towards some more unique pieces. Not the trendy, branded pieces with an expiration date, but the one-off, eye-catching pieces that might just find a forever home in your wardrobe.
Don’t be afraid to stand out
When people try to get into fashion and find their style, leaning into trends is an easy way to feel confident in your wardrobe. Wearing clothes that you know are on trend takes away some of the anxiety that comes from thinking people are going to judge your fashion choices. But following the crowd comes with its consequences – and makes it harder to find your individual sense of style.
Instead of being unique, you end up as just one of many.
Making your own style choices can feel daunting and even isolating – but, in due course, your confidence will grow. The only way to make that happen is to step out of your comfort zone. If you do find an outfit you like, take a picture so you remember it – and don’t be afraid to repeat it!
Move away from fast fashion
Without a doubt there are some advantages to shopping at fast fashion retailers. High street staples often offer affordable, ‘on-trend’ items of clothing – and when you dress the same as most, you won’t stand out for many of the right reasons, but you won’t stand out for the wrong ones, either.
The trade-off for accessibility is quality and authenticity.
There are many benefits to supporting individual fashion brands instead. Though you may find yourself paying a bit more for your clothes, what you get will be of a higher quality, produced with more care and likely more ethical consideration. Going ‘thrifting’ is also a great, affordable way to give a second home to pre-loved clothes. (If you’re looking for new places to find great clothes and are not sure where to start, there’s this awesome brand called Artiss that you might’ve heard of…)
